The New Paltz Geology crew hits the ground running, after picking up vans at the Los Vegas airport, we head straight to Red Rocks State Park. The red rocks are part of the Jurassic Aztec Formation, desert sandstones formed in the great Mesozoic erg, or sand sea. Note the dune cross-stratification in the lower right foreground. In the background are gray Cambrian limestones of the Bonanza King Formation, which have been thrust over the younger Aztec.
