The 1240 m (4100 ft) wide crater, blasted into horizontal strata of the Cororado plateau, was created about 50,000 years ago by the impact of an iron rich meteorite thought to have been 130 feet in diameter, and traveling at about 12 kilometers per second (26,800 mph).
