The Bennington Battle Memorial was erected in honor of Brigadier General John Stark and the 1400 New Hampshire men who came to the defense of Vermont in 1777. Their victories were contributing factors in the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York, two months later, a turning point in the Revolutionary War.
