Looking for a hike in the Sierra Nevada, I am intrigued by the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, which extends from Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park, west to Hetch Hetchy Valley. John Muir paints a dramatic portrait, "Everyone who is anything of a mountaineer should go on through the entire length of the canyon ... there is not a dull step all the way."
