Volcanic bomb near Red Cones, basaltic lava that cooled while still airborn. The volcanic cones, cinders, and lava are relatively recent in the geologic history, erupting about 5000 years ago. They are at the southern end of a long chain of volcanic features, the Mono–Inyo Craters. South of Red Cones the JMT leaves Ansel Adams Wilderness and enters John Muir Wilderness.
