Natchez has a strategic location on the lower Mississippi River, the French settled here in 1716, and later the British. The Spanish laid out the town circa 1790, and set aside this bluff as a public park, which it remains. It served as the capital of the Mississippi Territory, and then of Mississippi until 1822.
