The next day we tour Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Monument. The crossing of railway lines and the geological coincidence of coal, iron ore, and limestone, led James Withers Sloss to found the Sloss Furnace Company here in 1881. Production of pig iron continued for 90 years, and drove the Birmingham economy. One of the two blast furnaces can be seen at the left, and six hot blast stoves are in the center.
