The Vulcan statue on Red Mountain is the largest cast iron statue in the world, and symbolizes the roots of Birmingham in the iron industry. The 56 foot (17 m) tall statue depicting the Roman god of fire and forge was created for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. It's reception there was in part responsible for the explosive growth of Birmingham, which became known as "the magic city".
