To scout outcrops on the west side, we take Saddle Road to 2060 m (6800 ft). Even at this altitude, the summit of Mauna Loa at 4169 m (13679 ft) looms above. The largest volcano on Earth, it is also the largest mountain, extending from the ocean floor some 17 km (56000 ft) to its summit.
