Sulfer crystals growing in a vent at Ha‘akulamanu. The ‘ōhi‘a is well suited to survive in such conditions. In Hawaiian mythology, handsome ‘Ōhi‘a rejected Pele's advances, and, in a fit of jealousy, Pele transformed him into a tree.
