On May 18, 1980, the cataclysmic eruption of Mount St. Helens reduced the elevation of the summit from 2950 m (9677 ft) to 2549 m (8363 ft), as the northern flank of the mountain collapsed, uncapping the volcanic vent, the blast left a huge asymmetric 1.6 km (1 mile) wide crater.
